Some of us equate oriental food to Chinese food; noodles and fried rice and the unanimously loved; steamed dumplings. If you find yourself under this category; don’t be embarrassed because it’s probably not your fault. The Asian cuisine scene in India is still not as mature as one would think, and Chinese restaurants easily outnumber the other variants out there. Thai, Korean, Malaysian and Japanese dishes are scarce on the menu and if so, lack authenticity.
The most troublesome dilemma is evidently faced by health freaks, who are conscious about what they consume. Sure, cravings come demanding greasy noodles; but how often can you indulge in such sinful eating? How does one treat themselves to soul food when the weighing scale is forever mocking us? How does one try new cuisines and experience gastronomic adventures when they have to care about their waistline as well?

The first step to achieving the best of both worlds is cooking your own food, for that allows you to alternate ingredients wherever possible and minimize unnecessary additions that are harmful for you. For example you can use whole- wheat noodles, soba noodles or Udon noodles as a healthy alternative to generic noodles made from all-purpose flour. Similarly, you can replace white rice fried in vegetable oil with brown rice sautéed in spiced olive oil. You will experience similar taste and a lot less sin! Use more veggies and lean meats when you are making Thai curry for example. When eating Japanese Sushi, opt for Sashimi or Nigiri instead of those fancy rolls that can be very fattening and spice things up with a little bit of sweet chili dipping sauce for that umami flavor.
